West Coast Specialty & Emergency Animal Hospital

Overview

The design for West Coast Specialty and Emergency Animal Hospital was a transformational project turning a Staples box store into an award-winning 24/7 emergency and specialty animal hospital.

The previous specialty animal hospital was spread between several buildings, which their operations had outgrown. Our team began the pre-design phase by analyzing their existing hospital and individual departments and examining their workflows, pain points, and future growth plans. The design for the new single building brought challenges, including fitting the various circulation paths to connect numerous departments. We redesigned workflows into clear circulation modes, creating a more consistent, effective model specific to West Coast’s operational needs.

The hospital is now home to 16 exam rooms, air purifying systems that deliver 95-100% air purity in surgical suites, and a dedicated area for diagnostic imaging equipment, including X-ray, MRI, CT scan, and linear accelerator for radiation oncology treatment. With growing research supporting animal-centric veterinary protocols, calming decor, natural lighting, and separate waiting and exam rooms for dogs and cats were also incorporated to reduce stress and anxiety.
