Five Things I Learned During My Interior Design Internship

Beginning my internship, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of anxiety and curiosity about what lies ahead. As an upcoming college senior with a personal love for interior design, I had some expectations for my experience that were shaped by my academic studies and eagerness to finally apply classroom theories to real-world projects.

Little did I know that my time at MDA would challenge those expectations and expand my understanding of interior design in ways that would benefit me pre-graduation and beyond. From warm welcomed first days to memorable lessons learned, let’s take a look back at my internship and journey within the world of design.

Understanding the Interdisciplinary Nature of Design

Working closely with the architects and designers at MD Architects was a great experience. I insist all college students should try to find the time and opportunity to do so. Unlike the focused approach in interior design classes – where the emphasis is often on aesthetics and functionality within spaces – collaborating with architects, interior designers, and contractors provided a broader perspective. It showed me that there’s more to projects and design than just our interior design part.

A project and design are an entire team effort. Contractors, construction admins, client preferences, ASIs, RFI’s, redlines, landscaping, muralists, electricians, plumbers, and other stakeholders all come together to successfully make a project happen. This process is something university experience doesn’t expose students to. The connection between these disciplines challenged my perspective. Each project required effective communication and a serious appreciation for each profession’s expertise. Learning to navigate these collaborations not only enriched my understanding of design but also broadened my skill set, allowing me to seamlessly blend form and function and meaningfully contribute.

Practical Application of Design Principles

My academic design background provided a valuable foundation for my internship. I was easily able to apply concepts like building code requirements, space planning, and functional design to client work.

I found myself using my knowledge of code variances and proper appearance for construction sheets when designing the veterinary practices MD Architects is known for best. These practical applications reinforced the relevance of classroom learning and highlighted their impact on students preparing for the industry.

This internship also presented challenges that stretched beyond the confines of academic preparation. There is so much to learn as a student, and you have little time to do it. Finding the time to do your own research and explore beyond the classroom is really what will set you apart from others in the field/job search. The dynamic nature of client preferences and project requirements demands adaptability and quick learning. This pushed me to seek guidance from colleagues and expand my skill set to effectively meet the diverse needs of each project I was assisting with.

Technical Skills and Tools

Proficiency in software like AutoCAD and Revit, which I had gained in school, was crucial during my internship. These tools gave me ease in drafting and 3D modeling, allowing for quick turnaround, and smoother collaboration within the team.

MDA’s emphasis on sustainable material selection introduced me to new perspectives on environmental responsibility in design—a concept that resonates deeply with my generation’s values. Reflecting on my internship experience, I would advise fellow college seniors to prioritize learning these technical skills in college, and really search for unique tips and tricks from professors and peers who have more experience than you do. Mastering industry-standard software not only enhances efficiency but also demonstrates readiness and preparation for the technological demands of the design industry and your final year in college.

Time Management and Project Coordination

Managing multiple tasks and deadlines was a significant part of my internship. From creating furniture packages to ensuring redlines were done on time, effective time management was essential. This experience replicated the challenges I faced in balancing academic projects and extracurricular activities in college but on a more complex scale. Staying organized amidst deadlines required planning, and effective communication with team members. Utilizing project management tools and maintaining regular check-ins with experienced coworkers ensured that projects progressed smoothly and met client expectations. These practices not only enhanced my productivity but also underscored the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving project success, something I struggle with as a perfectionist and a “take-charge” individual.

Personal and Professional Growth

This wasn’t just a professional experience, but a journey of personal growth and advancement.

My internship at MD Architects was truly a positive experience that solidified my career goals in interior design. The exposure to diverse projects and the mentorship from awesome professionals expanded my perspective and fueled my passion for creating a variety of spaces. This is surprising to some since I had a hard-set decision to become a residential designer. Now, I appreciate and am open to practicing in both perimeters of residential and commercial.

Professionally, the internship provided valuable insights into the industry’s expectations and the importance of continuous learning within this field. The collaborative environment at MD Architects gave me a sense of responsibility and accountability, a mindset that I intend to carry forward into my future career endeavors. This experience challenged me, and I hope to influence others to go into this profession, as it’s very mind-wrenching but rewarding.

From learning the intricacies of interdisciplinary design to applying technical skills and managing project timelines, each aspect of the internship contributed to my development as a design professional. As I prepare to graduate and look forward to my career journey, I’m grateful for the lessons and experiences gained during my internship. I feel more equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue my passion for interior design. I’m excited to build upon the foundation laid at MD Architects and continue exploring the limitless possibilities within the dynamic world of interior design. My internship was not just a steppingstone required by my university, but a transformative chapter that’s prepared me for the challenges and opportunities that await.
